Wiener Studien

Joel Varela Rodríguez, Professor at the Department of Classical, French and Italian Philology and member of the Research Group on Classical and Medieval Studies, has just published in last number of Wiener Studien – Zeitschrift für klassische Philologie, Patristik und lateinische Tradition a study and critical edition of the preserved fragments of a commentary on the book of Ecclesiastes by Bishop Gregory of Elvira, who lived between the first half of the fourth century and the first years of the fifth. Gregorian exegetical orientation diverges in this treatise from the Origenian interpretation, which will become canonical after the writing of Jerome of Stridon’s Commentarius in Ecclesiasten (4th century). Thus, the critical edition replaces the previous editions, which did not know or analyze all the existing manuscript tradition. In addition, Professor Varela Rodríguez has published the editio princeps of a medieval commentary (c. 7th century) based not only on the extant fragments of Gregory’s treatise, but also, quite possibly, on parts not directly extant of it.
