This figure is already mentioned in the <em>Liber Sancti Iacobi<\/em>, and its meaning continues to fascinate today, having given rise to numerous interpretations.<\/p>\n<p>The article\u2014a contribution to a tribute honoring Canon and Archivist Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda D\u00edaz Fern\u00e1ndez\u2014is available online: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annuariumsanctiiacobi.org\/sites\/annuariumsanctiiacobi.org\/files\/asi-14\/03.%20ASI%2C%2014%20%282026%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Niveles de lectura y paralelos literarios de la <em>Mulier adulterata (Liber Sancti Iacobi 5,9)<\/em> del P\u00f3rtico de Plater\u00edas: <em>Ruodlieb <\/em>y el<em> Cuento de los tres consejos<\/em> (ATU 910B).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this work, the scholar combines iconographic study with source analysis. First, he explains the image of the woman with the skull as a figure whose various meanings\u2014identified by scholars\u2014can coexist harmoniously if placed on different levels of interpretation (anagogical, tropological, and literal).<\/p>\n<p>Second, the study focuses on the narrative surrounding this figure, whom the <em>Liber Sancti Iacobi<\/em> interprets as a punished adulteress. Among the roughly contemporary texts featuring this motif, the <em>Ruodlieb<\/em> (11th century) stands out; it points to the motif&#8217;s possible source\u2014a tale lost in its written form but which has spawned multiple oral variants, collected under the modern title <em>The Tale of the Three Pieces of Advice<\/em> (ATU 910B)<\/p>\n<p>Given its subject matter and the relevant dates, this tale may have originated as early as the 11th century within circles involved in the Gregorian Reform\u2014circles concerned with the fact that marriage was still governed by customary law, which permitted situations like the one depicted on the Plater\u00edas Portico.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Anguita Ja\u00e9n, a professor of Latin Philology in Lugo, has just published an extensive and in-depth study regarding the image of a woman holding a skull to her bosom\u2014sculpted on the Plater\u00edas Portico of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela (ca. 1100).
